About
I graduated from Bath Spa University in 2003 with a BA (Hons) in Creative Studies in English with the Study of Religions. My dissertation examined representations of reality and fiction in contemporary cultures, using The Matrix (Larry and Andy Wachowski, 1999) and the X Files (Chris Carter et al, 1993-2008) as case studies. I obtained a Masters with Distinction from Cardiff University in 2010, in the Teaching and Practice of Creative Writing. This course included a paper on issues surrounding client safety in writing therapy, which has since been published in Creative Writing: Teaching Theory and Pedagogy, and a portfolio including an extract from a speculative fiction novel and a series of flash fiction stories set in the South Wales valleys.
I am currently a PhD candidate at Cardiff's school of Journalism, Media and Culture, and my PhD has the working title of ‘The G Woman and The Fowl One: Fandom's Rewriting of Gender in The X Files.’ My research will examine how fanfiction writers address issues of gender inequality/stereotyping in the television show The X Files, and question how transformative fanfiction actually is.
I have presented papers at two conferences in the last year, and am undertaking research for two book chapters due for publication: ‘Buffy vs. Bella: Gender, Relationships and the Modern Vampire’ and ‘Normal Female Interest in Vampires and Werewolves Bonking: Slash and the Reconstruction of Meaning.’
