About
My research elaborates a normative theory of political liberalism based on constitutionalism. My thesis begins in the ethical domain by drawing on work to revive classical virtue ethics. It uses Martin Rhonheimer’s creative integration of Aristotle's aretaic ethics and Aquinas’s understanding of the operation of practical reason in apprehending fundamental human goods. In the legal-political sphere this apprehension of human goods by the practical reason helps construct - by means of an overlapping consensus - a ‘common good’ conception of human rights, social justice and civic virtue. The thesis then builds on contemporary interpretations of pre-modern thinkers such as Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas to defend a distinctively ‘political’ form of constitutionalism; which, it is argued, constitutes the most viable form of political liberalism in conditions of moral pluralism.
