About
I have been a lecturer in geoenvironmental engineering at Cardiff University School of Engineering since September 2006. I undertook doctoral studies at Oxford University and the NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (Oxford) and postdoctoral work at Cambridge University Engineering Department, working with the SUBR:IM (Sustainable Urban Brownfield Regeneration: Integrated Management) research consortium.
Previous areas of research include:
- Using electric fields to encourage bioremediation through enhancing bioavailability.
- Development of a methodology for assessment of the sustainability of contaminated land remediation technologies.
- Enhancing long-term performance of in-situ stabilised, solidified contaminated soil by encouraging biodegradation of stabilised/solidified organic contaminants.
- Tracking uptake of lithium in plants using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Currently, I am undertaking work in a number of areas, with particular focus on biotechnology in civil and environmental engineering. These include:
- Biotechnology in contaminated land remediation, particularly in technologies used in situ
- Biogeotechnics - the interaction between geotechnical engineering and living organisms, especially microorganisms
