Prior to joining the team in Cardiff, he taught Sociology and Cultural Studies at Aston University and the University of Birmingham. Xiaodong is committed to inter-disciplinary research, with a particular interest in social issues in China, as a global rising power. His main research area is on gender and migration, with a specific focus on class-based male migrant workers and their shifting masculine identities in urban China. His most recent study critically examines male identity formation and well-being within family life and the work place in urban China. He is currently working on a project, exploring a younger generation of Chinese urban workers, addressing issues of risk, well-being, social sustainability and sustainable place.
